Desk setup content online is mostly furniture photography. The actual research on workstations points to a short list of adjustments with real effects on comfort and long-term musculoskeletal health — and a longer list of expensive upgrades with no evidence behind them. Here's the evidence-based version, ranked by how much each matters.

1. The monitor rule: top of screen at eye level#

The highest-impact adjustment is free: raise your display so the top edge sits at or slightly below eye level, about an arm's length away. Laptops are the worst offenders — their screens sit 20–25cm below healthy height, guaranteeing hours of daily neck flexion ("tech neck"), which loads the cervical spine several times head-weight.

Fixes cost nearly nothing: a laptop stand plus external keyboard/mouse, or a stack of books under a monitor. Monitor arms add flexibility but aren't required — height and distance are what matter. For multiple displays: primary screen centered; secondary angled toward you, not your neck permanently rotated toward a side monitor.

2. The chair: support beats price tag#

Chair marketing sells features; ergonomics research cares about four things:

  • Adjustable height so feet rest flat on floor (or a footrest) with knees roughly at hip level
  • Lower-back (lumbar) support maintaining the spine's natural curve — a $15 lumbar cushion transforms most flat-backed chairs
  • Recline freedom: slight recline (~100–110°) with back supported reduces spinal load versus rigid 90° sitting
  • Armrests set so shoulders stay relaxed, elbows near ~90° when typing — armrests forcing shrugged shoulders are worse than none

A modest adjustable chair properly configured outperforms a premium one misadjusted. Which reveals the real secret of this whole list: setup maintenance beats hardware.

3. Desk depth and keyboard position: protect the wrists#

Wrists suffer when keyboards force upward bending (extension) for hours — a documented contributor to overuse injuries like RSI. The evidence-based configuration:

  • Keyboard and mouse at elbow height, forearms roughly parallel to floor
  • Wrists neutral — floating straight, not bent up or resting bent on a desk edge (wrist rests are for pauses, not while actively typing)
  • Enough desk depth to push the monitor back to proper distance
  • Negative tilt keyboard trays help some people; raising the keyboard's back edge (as many stands do) does the opposite of good

4. Lighting: fight glare, not brightness#

Eye strain complaints usually trace to contrast problems: a bright window behind the screen forces pupils to compromise between panel and backdrop. Position perpendicular to windows, use blinds against direct glare, and match ambient light to screen brightness rather than working in a cave lit only by the display. The 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds) addresses the remaining eye-strain component — focusing muscle fatigue — which no monitor purchase fixes.

5. Movement: the uncomfortable truth on top#

The strongest finding in all workstation research isn't about equipment at all: any static posture becomes harmful in proportion to its duration. Perfect chairs held for eight uninterrupted hours still hurt people; mediocre setups with regular movement mostly don't. Standing desks help by enabling position changes — not because standing is virtuous in itself (all-day standing carries its own costs).

Practical translation: alternate sit/stand if available, take brief movement breaks hourly, walk during calls where possible, and treat micro-breaks as part of the job (they double as focus resets). The best posture is the next posture.

What to skip#

Gaming-chair aesthetics without lumbar adjustability; wrist rests used while typing; blue-light-glasses promises beyond evening comfort; $400 cables-and-accessories that change nothing structural; standing desks bought without the habit of actually switching positions.

The honest summary: raise the screen, support the lower back, flatten the wrists, kill the glare, move hourly — total cost potentially under fifty dollars, benefit compounding over every future working year. Your spine keeps the receipts either way.
